Practical Significance (or Insignificance) of a Household Goods Moving License

Since you are reading this article, chances are you will have the pleasure of moving to a new location soon. I bet you are all excited about spending all that time planning, packing, running around making various arrangements, and going through other joys associated with relocation.

That's called sarcasm, I am sure you've heard of that before. More likely than the scenario above, you are sitting on a chair, holding your head with both hands, thinking of the things you should have done differently in your life to not have brought this nightmare, which, you are sure, was sent to you from above as a punishment for something.

To be more exact, that's how you looked like 5 minutes ago. Right now, you are googling. Looking for a moving company that can save your life. And that's how you came here.

Every moving company you've talked to or visited website talks about a household goods moving license. Sounds like they are very proud of it. What do you care, right? It's couple of people picking up, loading, and then delivering your items couple of blocks away. What are they bragging about?

To some extent, you are absolutely right: moving license will not help you choose the best movers. But at least it will give you couple of guarantees, which you will not have if you go with someone found around the corner.

  • To obtain and maintain a moving license, moving companies have to meet certain insurance requirements. And although insurance coverage usually is not extremely high, at least you'll know they have something.
  • Businesses operating under federal or state authority are governed by certain transportation laws, which protect the consumer. They do protect moving companies as well, but that is a totally different subject.
  • After obtaining a moving license, movers have to follow certain procedures and follow the rules of doing business. If they don't follow them consistently, they lose the license. So, if they have a license, chances are their service is at least of a decent quality.
  • Most of the states require criminal background checks before issuing a moving license, to protect consumers from having felons entering their house and taking over their belongings.

As it was said earlier, a fact that someone holds a household goods moving license does not guarantee you will be clapping your hands from joy when the moving day comes. But at least you will know the people that you let in your house are registered with the authorities, possess insurance and are doing at least an OK job (or better).

That's a big step up from hiring some random dude on the street, opening your door on the move day, and seeing Freddy Kruger with his team ready to make your moving day special!
